In what was traditionally a relatively conservative, non-dynamic industry, the drive for affordable, sustainable and reliable solutions is having a similar effect in other countries on the continent. Determining optimal public transport modes – have we made the right choices?
South Africa’s public transport action plan supports the establishment of Integrated Rapid Public Transport Networks (IRPTN) through Priority Rail Corridors and Bus Rapid Transit systems in major cities. To date, the cities that prepared their IRPTN focused mainly on Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). This paper provides a Technology Choice Framework and a methodology to analyse alternative public transport modes to determine the most optimal mode per corridor in the integrated public transport network.
